The hiatus is over, and we’re pleased to bring back Interview Friday with our amazing readers! Today, we feature an incredibly inspirational social media maven that we met through our team, SF Etsy.
Wonderland Organics: Tell us a little about your background!
Caitlin Bacher: I’m Caitlin Bacher, founder of Little Farm Media. I grew up in northern New Mexico and moved to San Diego to attend UCSD. I taught elementary school for eight years in San Diego and also served as the Chief Communications Officer for my teacher’s union. As CCO, I developed a website, blog, and social media strategy to generate positive press for the teachers in my district. I did a little of everything: PR, website design, blog writing, and social media management. I loved all of it, especially the social media management. Being a teacher taught me how to tell a story and deliver engaging content to my students. I found these skills to be very useful when planning social media strategy.
Wonderland Organics: That’s fantastic! How did Little Farm Media come about?
Caitlin Bacher: After my daughter was born, I knew I wanted more flexibility in my schedule. I decided to take a break from being an elementary school teacher and develop a new career-path for myself. Some of my friends started their own businesses as makers and designers. Like most small business owners, they struggled with developing a marketing plan on social media. I began helping them develop their social media strategy and fell in love with the process. I made a couple of cold-calls, got some referrals, and the rest is history.
Wonderland Organics: We think it’s great that you’ve thrived on social media, as it’s often the hardest part for entrepreneurs. What does a typical day look like?
Caitlin Bacher: After I drop my 2.5 year old daughter off at daycare, I head over to the coffee shop by my apartment. I am much more productive if I get out of the house. I order an Americano, set up my laptop, and begin answering emails. Occasionally I’ll have a phone meeting with a client. Then I visit Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook, and Instagram to monitor mentions. If someone has something to say about a client, good or bad, I need to be the first to know about it. Once that is finished I go home to eat lunch.I reserve all my strategy planning and scheduling for the afternoon. The first thing I do after lunch is look at my Google calendar. Each day has a different set of tasks, ranging anywhere from planning two weeks worth of tweets to developing a marketing strategy for Pinterest. I would be lost without my calendar. I have four clients right now that subscribe to my Full Service plan, not to mention the occasional consulting gig. Organization is key. I usually have to set an alarm to pick up my daughter because the afternoon really flies by.
Wonderland Organics: We’re sure that the day goes by fast with your schedule. What social media sites do you usually haunt? Do you have a favorite?
Caitlin Bacher: I’m on Pinterest, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and Houzz. My personal favorites are Instagram and Twitter: @littlefarmmedia. I like the intimacy of Instagram and the fast pace of Twitter.
Wonderland Organics: We recently got into Twitter because of our SFEtsy tweet chats, and you’re right! Twitter is great to use. What social media tips would you recommend for companies?
Caitlin Bacher: Have a very deep understanding of who your target customer is. Everything you post and tweet should be directed to this customer. Which social media platforms do they flock to? What content can you provide that they would find useful? What do they talk about? Who do they follow and why?
Wonderland Organics: Thank you for this! Always keep your customer in mind. Do you have any advice for people looking to go the entrepreneurial route?
Caitlin Bacher: There will be at least one moment in the beginning when you feel like there is absolutely no way you will ever meet your goals. It will pass.
Wonderland Organics: We hope that your readers keep this in mind. And last but not least, what’s your favorite part of the Wonderland Organics blog/website?
Caitlin Bacher: I really love your blog, especially the ‘Skincare Tips’ section. Can’t resist a good homemade face mask.
Thank you so much to Caitlin for talking to us today! Be sure to follow her on Twitter and Instagram, and if you have any questions about social media, or want to reach out to her for more information and advice, feel free to do so.
